History of Mount Pearl Baseball

In 1958 the Mount Pearl Baseball Association was established with the development of a minor program for ages 8 to 18. The league played at the Morris Avenue ball field, or the Second Street field as it was called. The first president of the baseball association was Gerald Whitty. The championship trophy was donated by the Morris family and awards were presented at Barney’s on Topsail Road. This program continued for many years and was supported by various groups in the community.

In the mid-1960s the Morris family donated land for a new field at the intersections of First Street, St. David's Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue and it was named St. David's Field. It was constructed by a highly motivated group of volunteers. The first Mount Pearl senior league was established there and Roy Mercer was installed as the first president of the senior league. In its first few years the team sponsors were the Lion’s Club, The Royal Canadian Legion, Mount Pearl Branch and Noseworthy’s Esso. The championship trophy for the league was donated by “Dog and Suds”.

This league continued until the early 1970s when an accident at the field resulted in the closure of the field and the folding of the senior league. After the league closed down, a senior all-star team from Mount Pearl entered the St. John’s Baseball League and competed until 1975. The team was originally known as the “Mount Pearl Stealers” and later as “Stokes Angels”.

During the 70s the city of Mount Pearl organized a minor baseball program which saw teams compete in its own house league system as well as all Newfoundland competition. In 1980, the minor association, re-established under President Jed Butt, with a committee of interested parents, saw the beginning of an evening program at Squires field and St. David’s Field. Over 500 kids took part in this league.

Minor baseball flourished during the 1980s as Mount Pearl won Mosquito, Pee Wee and Bantam titles at the Provincial and Atlantic Championships. The All-Star Teams were named the Blazers. In 1988 the association hosted the provincial Summer Games. A new field was constructed at Pearlgate in preparation for these games.  The league presently uses, Pearlgate Field Blue Jays Field, St. Peter's Field, Squires Field, Smallwood field and Richard Levandier Field.

The Mount Pearl Minor Baseball Association had become one of the main baseball centres in the province. Teams from Mount Pearl compete in all age divisions and in all levels of competition and have won several Atlantic titles.

To enhance the baseball program in the City of Mount Pearl, a regulation senior field was constructed at the Smallwood complex in 1992. The addition of this facility enabled the Mount Pearl Baseball Association to expand and develop its own leagues. Consequently, in 1994, a senior league was formed under a three man committee of Bill Fitzgerald, Harry Bartlett and Joe Wadden. In its first year of operation the senior league was comprised of five teams: Paradise, Knights, Legion, A&W Midget all-stars and the Guards.

In 1996 the Association also set up a five team Junior league comprised of: Paradise, Legion, Knights, C.B.S. and Guards. Residents of Mount Pearl no longer had to compete in the St. John’s league. By 1996 Mount Pearl had claimed its first Provincial Junior Title.

Another milestone was reached when, in 1997, Mount Pearl hosted the Canadian Senior Men’s Tournament and co-hosted again with St. John’s in 2014.

In 2008 Mount Pearl Minor Baseball separated from Junior and Senior to focus on younger players and their development. A rebranding took place and a website was created to help rebuild and provide timely information for the players. A day camp was established to help the younger players with skill development.

The Senior and Junior teams for Mount Pearl are presently under St. John’s Amateur Baseball Association and there are 6 Intermediate Teams and 6 Senior Teams. Two teams from each of these divisions are from Mount Pearl/CBS and play on Smallwood field as well as St. Pat’s.

In 2011 Greenwood Field was reconstructed to allow for the expansion of Novice and Rookie Players. St. David’s Field was decommissioned in 2013 to allow for a park for the residents of Mount Pearl. The closure of St. David’s prompted the city to build a new field near St. Peter’s Junior High and Morris Academy.

2015 was a banner year for our league. Mount Pearl won four provincial titles; Mosquito AAA (1st time in 10 years), Peewee AAA (1st time in 8 years), Bantam AA (2nd year in a row) and Mosquito A. The Mosquito AAA team also won silver at the Atlantics which was the best performance in 30 years for this division. The Peewee AAA team also competed in Baseball Canada's 13U National Atlantics and placed a respectable 4th place.

Charles Dyke was voted as the "Baseball NL Coach of the Year" for his role as head coach with the Mosquito AAA team. Mount Pearl also hosted a Blue Jays rally named "Blue Jays Night at the Field" where over 900 players and parents attended to celebrate the Jays run at the pennant.

2016 was a very busy year and saw further growth as St. Peter's Baseball Field was completed which provided minor baseball in Mount Pearl with it's own premiere minor ball field with lights. This addition to our league will provide increased growth opportunities. Pearlgate field was relegated to a practice field as it is slated for decommission to accommodate a hotel. Our Bantam AA team won the provincials for the third year in a row. Also, Mount Pearl hosted the Jays Honda Super Camps for the first time. The Jays Care Foundation also awarded Mount Pearl with over $26000.00 to renovate Greenwood Field.

With this money we were able to build a perimeter fence and dugouts and provide a quality baseball field for our Novice and Rookie divisions. We also renamed the field to "Blue Jays Field".  This completes the addition of facilities for our league as we now have access to 6 ball fields (four with lights) for league play and competitive tournaments.

Also, in 2016 we held our first annual "McDonald's Mega Tournament" which included 30 teams hosted on five different baseball fields. In September we hosted Baseball Canada's 13U National Atlantic Championship which included 8 teams from the Atlantic Provinces. The was the first "Minor" National tournament ever hosted by Mount Pearl.

2017 saw further upgrades to our fields with the City's installation of new aluminum bleachers for Smallwood and Squires fields. A new score clock was installed at Smallwood Field as well as a new storage container for our field equipment. Our new batting cage finally became a reality and was well used by all players in our day camps as well as by our all star teams. We won three provincial titles which included Bantam AAA (1st time in 10 years), Peewee AA (1st time in 8 years) and Mosquito A. Both the Intermediate Knights and the Senior Knights made the playoffs for the first time in many years.

In 2019, Joe Wadden retired from baseball after many years of being President and coach. The Mount Pearl Senior and Junior teams will now be managed under a committee chaired by Greg Williams.

2020 was a challenging year due to the Covid 19 epidemic. No National, Atlantic or Provincial Tournaments were played, however, regional tournaments were allowed.

In 2021 the 18U Blazers team won both the provincial Qualifier and the Provincials and represented Mount Pearl at the Atlantics in New  Brunswick. No other 18U team from Mount Pearl has ever won both of these tournaments in the same year. Mount Pearl's Junior Blazers took the silver in the Provincials and were undefeated in the round robin.

2022 was a challenging year for Baseball in Mount Pearl due to the City strike which started two weeks into the season. All fields were vacated due to picket action. After a pause of about two weeks, we managed to secure field time at the 1st Baptist Church on Wyatt Boulevard thanks to Pastor Homan. Our T-Ball/Rally Cap, Novice and Rookie programs played on this facility for the remainder of the season. Also, the city of St. John's gave us field time at Waterford Valley Field and Shea Heights Field so that we could run 11U and 13U house leagues. Our all-star, 15U and 18U all played away games only and tournaments. We also had to cancel the McDonalds Tournament. Our 18UAA and 11UAAA Teams both won the provincials at St. Pats. We hosted the 11U AAA Provincial at Little St. Pats. 7 Players on the 18U team were on the last 11U AAA team to win the provincial in 2015.
